Award-winning singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Angie Colman is an artist who, in a short amount of time, has captivated Australian audiences with her vulnerable and tender yet passionate and fierce compositions that incorporate alt-pop, rock and, at times, indie-folk elements. Highlighted as a Triple J Unearthed Feature Artist in 2023 and taking out the RAC Arena Limelight Grant earlier this year, Angie announces her forthcoming, highly anticipated debut EP with the release of her latest poignant single, Out of the Headlights.
Inspired by artists like Bon Iver, Big Thief, Joni Mitchel, Phoebe Bridgers, Courtney Barnett and Julia Jacklin, Out of the Headlights dynamically transitions from delicate and sensitive to emotional and powerful. Grounded in full-bodied electric guitar strums, embellished with a string ensemble, and guided by Angie’s distinctive and spellbinding vocals, she explains that the song “is about being directionless, untrusting, and cold for a long period of time and then meeting someone who’s unwavering kindness enables you to feel more whole again.”
Thematically evolving from the saying, a deer in the headlights, Angie explains, “The “headlights” is an image that used to come to my mind of being frozen emotionally, riddled with fear that if I showed myself to people they would run me down and leave me in the dark.” Colman eloquently captures hints of these anxious and fearful feelings, as well as those introspective thoughts of clarity, tonally and lyrically, such as the track's catchy chorus hook of “Take me out of the headlights, then take me home”.
Recorded with Ryan K Brennan (King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Julia Jacklin, Noah Dillon), with her band Miles Gilbert (drums), Sarah Curran (guitar), and Kieran Barnes (bass), and the addition of FAMES Project contributing to string composition, arrangement, and performance, Angie elaborates “The song was written quite instinctively for me, and I brought it to producer Ryan Brennan about two weeks before we actually recorded it. A lot of the songs on the EP are like this where they’re extremely raw and I didn’t change very much from when they were created to when they were recorded. The process of recording this track took Ryan and several months. We weren’t sure what kind of energy it was meant to have yet so we actually re-recorded three times. I really liked that this song was tough for me to understand it wanted. It feels like it has a mind of its own and wanted me to work for it.”
Continuing, “Once we were happy with the overall vibe, we got FAMES composers Leo [Vincent] and Louis [Chenu] to compose a strings section for this, and I absolutely adored it. It makes the track so heartfelt and emotional and really is the cherry on the cake. I’m super proud of it.”
As the first taste of what’s to come on the full 6-track EP, fans can expect a release that captures more of the versatility of intimate passion and desperate, honest emotion that Angie has become so well known for. In the meantime, Out of the Headlights will be treated to a launch event on 30 November at The Bird, Northbridge (WA).
