Coming in fresh off winning WAM’s (West Australian Music) ‘Best Blues Act’ for 2023, Walyalup/ Fremantle-based alt-blues rocker Dan Howls is someone who “knows his way around a bluesy stomper” (Pilerats), announcing the release of the bands latest potent, stormy, stomper Low, out 23 August.

Since their inception, Dan Howls have become renowned for their gritty blues tones, authentic, unwavering energy, and engrossing live performances. Awarded a WAM ‘Blues Song of The Year’ and RTRFM’s ‘Album of The Week’ with their debut LP A Dime A Dozen (2018), and taking out WAM’s ‘Best Blues Act’ for 2023, the four-piece have gone from strength to strength, releasing a handful of phenomenal singles, including King Si, and most recent Bad Blood, in addition to sell-out headline shows internationally, captivating audiences at festivals such as Wave Rock Weekender, and Nannup Music Festival (even taking out their 2016 ‘emerging artist award’), and supporting the likes of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and The Murlocs.

Kicking off with a sizzling riff soulfully plucked on an electric guitar, Low sonically crafts a rich landscape where growling guitars, rolling bass, and hearty drums thrive. Such as Dan’s gravelly voice contrasts yet compliments singer/ guitarist Julia Weller’s silky backing vocals, the steady-paced, atmospheric, somewhat eerie verses act as a calm before the storm against the explosive, high-energy of the track's cracking breakdowns.

In this vein, Dan Howls explains, “This release was written about a time we were out in the desert at a festival, there was a giant storm rolling in, and we knew our whole camp and tent was about to be blown away. We started digging trenches around our little picnic spot, and that was about as much as we could do. We lost our whole tent that night. It's really about accepting things, and not dwelling on things you can't control, and changing the things that you can.”

Co-written by Dan, Julia, Callum Adcock (bass), Josh Cutler (drums), and Blake Hart, Low

was recorded with and mixed by the legendary Mitch Mcdonald (The Love Junkies) at Black Box Retrieval Services in WA and mastered by Grammy Award-winning Australian mastering engineer William Bowden.

Low will be celebrated with a single launch at Mojo’s Bar, Walyalup/ Fremantle, on 13 September. More info can be found https://linktr.ee/danhowlsmusic
