James Colton is waiting on line 1... with his new single 'Your Call Is Important To Us'

Award-nominated composer and multi-instrumentalist James Colton returns with his latest release, Your Call Is Important To Us — a delightfully bright and sonically rich instrumental electronica/ vaporwave single out 9 May from his debut album Emotional Vampire, due later this May. 

The track follows previous singles Catfisher, Business As Usual, and Clockwork Love, continuing Colton’s unrelenting streak of thoughtful, genre-hopping brilliance.

Inspired by charming TV montage music from Romanian composer Vladimir Cosma, Colton reimagines the aesthetic with crunchy lo-fi drums, studio-recorded guitars, Rhodes piano, and a dreamy instrumental palette featuring flute, pedal steel, synths and more. Beginning as a dusty vintage recording and slowly morphing into a high-definition surround soundscape, Your Call Is Important To Us is a sonic evolution, reminiscent of being left on hold — part art experiment, part earworm, and overall incredibly satisfying.

The accompanying video amplifies this transformation visually, opening with retro TV’s and a cassette player in grainy black and white, and shifting gradually into full HD colour as the music blossoms — a clever and playful nod to the track’s unfolding layers.

Known for his work as a film score composer (WA Screen Culture Awards nominee, 2023), Colton’s debut solo record has been years in the making. His roots in heavy rock bands, symphonic orchestras, and an unashamed love for everything from 80s pop to “unlistenable jazz” have forged a uniquely eclectic sound. Self-described as “a music nerd,” Colton lets the music do the talking — and it says a lot.

Chill, happy, and deeply detailed, Your Call Is Important To Us is anything but background noise. It’s experimental electronica with a warm pulse, an indie soundtrack for the digital age, and a perfect teaser for the lush world of Emotional Vampire.
