Iconic ensemble Sex on Toast are a Naarm/ Melbourne based enigma who combine serious talent with infectious jovial energy, creating impactful releases that loll between the realms of soul, funk, and theatrical rock.

With an extensive and impressive discography including an LP, two EP’s and a handful of singles such as Oh, Loretta! (that has amassed over 12-million streams on Spotify alone), the magic of Sex on Toast continues to strengthen as they tease their upcoming album Pegasus with a vivid and energetic new single; Another One

Starting off with a some-what chaotic assortment of buzzes, guitar noises, and church bells, Another One kicks into gear early in the piece, breaking into its uplifting catchy chorus before rolling into a slick rumbling verse. Singer, guitarist, and driving force behind the group Angus Leslie explains “This song is about an unrequited crush I had on a semi-famous Australian singer in the year 2019, and explores the themes of fantasy, self loathing, sobriety, DVD AND Blu Ray. This style of lyric-writing places the song in a surreal dream-like world that is a unifying factor on the entire Pegasus album.”

Featuring 11 different musicians playing a range of instruments including organ, clavinet, kalimba, trombone, sousaphone, xylophone, to your more conventional drums, bass, guitars, synth, and vocals (including a ‘Pegasus rant’ to boot) Angus shares that “In 2021 we hit the studio at Hothouse in St Kilda, and threw down a few takes of the song, altogether, live as a band. From memory it didn’t take too many takes! Schniel used an aluminium bass, James was bashing away at Barney McAll’s Hohner clavinet, while Louis and I played the guitar parts in unison. Jessi’s drum recording made liberal use of the studio’s “stairwell mic.” Many hours of vocal, B3 organ and assorted keyboards, trombone, guitar and noise overdubs later and we arrived at the monstrosity you hear today!”

On the writing of the release, Angus elaborates that “The original version of this song was properly finished on a little holiday in Hollywood. Literally! I had just checked out Frank Zappa’s old pad in Laurel Canyon (the same one the cover of Hot Rats was taken at) and I was doing these long walks around LA, mostly in the West Hollywood area. I worked and re-worked it on that walk and came down and recorded the demo in my motel.”

Gracing festivals such as Falls, Party In The Paddock, Melbourne International Jazz Festival (to name just a few), supporting the likes of Neil Hamburger (USA), Hiatus Kaiyote, Kate Miller-Heidke, Miami Horror, The Fatback Band (USA) and most recently Todd Rundgren (USA), and embarking on their own unforgettable headline tours around Australia and New Zealand, Sex on Toast’s live shows have been described by critics as “a musical treat like no other” (Kaya Martin, Beat Magazine) “From the costumes to the choreography to the musical performance, they come ready to impress. Fans may never know what exactly to expect from the live show because they like to mix it up, but it’s guaranteed to be memorable.”

To celebrate the release of Another One the 7-piece iteration of the band will be hitting the road to play Thursday April 4 at The Lansdowne, Eora/ Sydney and Friday April 5 at the Northcote Social Club, Naarm/ Melbourne. Tickets are on sale now at linktr.ee/sexontoast.
