Timothy Nelson has long been a fixture of the Australian music scene, celebrated for his evocative songwriting and dynamic performances. With multiple awards to his name, Nelson continues to push creative boundaries, earning acclaim for his authenticity and artistry. Debaser Tapes - out 19 February, marks the next chapter in a career defined by heartfelt connection and musical exploration.

With Debaser Tapes, Timothy Nelson delivers his most personal and eclectic work to date. A rich blend of heartfelt storytelling and melodic craftsmanship against a lush and dynamic musical backdrop, the album showcases Nelson’s signature ability to bridge classic pop-rock influences with a modern sensibility.

"This album has been such a journey, it’s a little hard to believe it’s finally being released", Nelson reflects. "I started recording it somewhere back in 2019 with Andy Lawson at Debaser, his home studio—which, of course, the record is now named after."

Nelson’s vision for Debaser Tapes was to create an eclectic body of work where each song could dictate its own direction. "In some ways, a song like Your House has no business being on a record with Greenmount Hill, but that was kind of the point," he says. “Lyrically, I think a lot of these songs are connected on some deeper level, even if some feel a little more playful on the surface than others. These ten songs as a whole definitely represented where I was at creatively, and they were always intended to be on this record.”

The album’s production spanned five years, enduring interruptions and transformations, such as COVID-19, which “killed the momentum for a bit" and led to songs being finished and released one by one, “For a minute, I wasn’t sure what I was aiming for anymore” Timothy shares, “I would go and release a song here and there, but also get caught up in a bunch of side projects and other life things… so the album almost fell apart because I guess I just lost sight of it. And then, one day I was going back over all the songs, including the few that hadn’t been finished yet, and I fell back in love with the whole thing.”

For Nelson, the album’s title pays tribute to the creative process and his time working with Lawson "Driving out to the house, walking up the hill to record all day, drinking margaritas with him and his wife Kato at night— the title, and the artwork, is my way of paying tribute to that whole aspect of this record. To me, the best part of making a record with anyone is the time you spend with whoever you’re making it with."

Timothy Nelson’s new album Debaser Tapes is out now.
